Deanne Gilson - Ballarat
Deanne is a proud Wathaurung woman from Ballarat, currently undertaking a PhD into Aboriginal women’s business. Deanne’s art practice deals with the objectification of Aboriginal women by the male colonial gaze and the loss of traditional practices and culture through colonisation.
Deanne’s work aims to heal, disrupt and challenge the make colonial gaze and link this to the revived practice of ceremony within her art. Multi-media artworks are brought to life, existing as spiritual entities of ancestors, past, present and future. Country is present in the use of ochre and object.
