Stephan Pleban - Ballarat
Stephan Plebans’s art practice is inspired by images culled from the internet and personal photographs taken directly from the landscape. The paintings are highly worked with oil and wax which fracture the focus. He aim to build an ominous atmosphere that touches on the sublime but transcends romantic clichés usually associated with an Australian landscape. Through the process of painting Stephan builds an ethereal atmosphere, capturing the landscape and its ambiguities by examining weather, natural disasters and the relationship people have with nature. The works have no firm conceptual links and no fixed meaning. Stephan resolves resolutions during the process, painting as though in a boxing match: applying, looking, removing, reapplying, investing time to the activity of painting, and letting the work take on a life of its own.
